Get some Rustoleum paint on that rust ASAP as it can ruin the whole car by rotting through a suspension mount .
If you stop the rust now , then you can simply remove the battery tray and glop the rust hole closed so cold air , water & engine fumes don't invade the Passenger Compartment .
There's a comprehensive writeup of doing this on some old 300TD , I know not where but it has pictures etc. and the young fellow was able to turn a $500 pig's ear into a nice Turbo Diesel Sports Wagon with American Ingenuity and lots of elbow grease .
It's (? Her ?) name will come to you as you work on and drive it...
