[diesel_mercedes] Progress ? (IP Delivery Valves [3 Attachments]

Alright then  .

After a long day at work I went home and got right to it , here's the scoop , shoop :

Pic. # 1 is the used set of delivery valves and parts I scavenged from a 1980 W-116 , the pie pan I used to soak and clean them in alcohol , they're all nice and squeaky clean and wire brushed etc.

Pic. # 2 is the old delivery valves I removed from my 1984 300CD , in the order and position I removed them in ~ notice that two of the ring parts had been installed upside-down by some one.... not me , I wonder whom .

The one on the far left you can see the dull finish of corrosion ~ it's not dirty , this is after I spent some time wire brushing it , why I decided to yank them all out to - night .

I removed all the fuel pipes and set them aside then removed one delivery valve at a time , peered in the open IP hole , cleaned it up and installed the new (used 1981) valves and pintles .

Here's what I found :

# 1 was clean as I'd taken it apart yesterday , only a tiny bit of crud on the bottom of the ring part .

# 2 had A WATER DROPLET (YIKES !) on the bottom of the ring part as well as fine dirt and some opaque stuff (liquid) in the bottom of the open IP hole , no woder this poor thing smoked and couldn't be properly timed .

# 3 had lots of crud and grey colored liquid in the IP hole mixed with the Diesel fuel .

# 4 had RUSTY GUNK (more yikes !) all over the delivery valve , the pintle and in the bottom of the IP hole too .

# 5 had more opaque stuff and fine dirt on the bottom of the ring part and in the IP hole .

ALL the pintles (they're fluted , not sure if you can see this in my crappy photo) had lots of mostly fine crud in their flutes .

I used Ether (starting fluid) with a plastic snorkel to blow the crud and water etc. out of each open IP hole as I went along , trying hard to maintain as clean as i can get inside the injection system .

I tried to remove the copper sealing ring with my dental pick but it's jammed in there pretty tight .

I didn't see any copper in the # 5 hole , either it has a mild steel , alloy or (worse) NO sealing ring but it hadn't been leaking so I took a chance and buttoned it all back up after cleaning everything and replacing the valves .

Interestingly , the valves I took out , the ring part (# 6) anyway , are shaped differently than the one in picture # 3 and the ones from the 1981 W116 too .

Because I spotted water droplets and water almost *instantly* blows out injector tips , I dumped a quart of alcohol in the fuel tank , I have about 1/3 a tank full right now and I plan to drive it dry or as close to that as I can .

Leaving fr a spirited test drive at various loads and speeds , I'm quite sure it's smoking _far_ less , it idles slower , 600 RPM , used to be 750 and I changed nothing apart from the old crappy , rusty , dirty , mis assembled delivery valves .

It also runs noticeably smoother now , I'll wait until I've gone through another tank of fuel before I trust this as there may well be more crud / rust in the tank that'll come loose with the alcohol .

Whew .

I feel like I've been polishing a turd for the last few years here but the truth is : I REALLY like driving this car ! .

I think that's it on the DIY   side. Any more and you need $$tools

[diesel_mercedes] Delivery Valve Image [1 Attachment]

Ooookay then ;

Knowing what the part is properly called allowed me to find  a perfect image....

Part # 6 is what I was calling the ' ring ' part ~ the one I removed from my Coupe has corrosion blemishes around the external part , this cannot be a good thing so I'll prolly replace them all this afternoon and see what I get .

Interestingly , it smoked badly last night after I stopped the leak but not noticeably to - day when I drove it to lunch....

In any case I'm sure this IP is done for so I'll swap it out as soon as I can .

I see the copper crush washer too , it's item # 5 , I wonder why I didn't see it when I peered into the hole after removing everything else .

THANK YOU DNO ! .

I watched it and found what you mention .

Nate, I posted a video (somehow) on your "raw fuel thread". Check at 19 min mark. he pulls the elements out. I pulled them from mine to confirm the orientation of the sleeve that the fluted part fits in. The grove on the outside is down. My memory was off on the copper ring, it' a flat copper washer.
When I got my first MB 240d someone before did service and put two washers in one, and none in the next. Leaked.

[diesel_mercedes] Injector Pump Discharge Valves (elements)

So far I have not found any crush washers in any of these I've touched , maybe I'm talking about a different part .

Yes , I would LOVE for you to remove the 17MM nut and fuel pipe then the 15MM fitting and carefully removed the spring and then the little two piece thing under neath the spring ~ that's whatI'm fooling with and I need to know for sure how those two pieces are assembled before touching the IP again .

I've been googling it and have found many diagrams and photos but none of this part apart for viewing .

I'd really like to address this to - day if anyone can find a picture or take and post one up of the parts from an old I.P. .

TIA ,

-Nate

OK, the leak is gone. I had a thought (while sleeping) about that #1 line.
Mine leaked also after a previous cleaning, and when thinking about how to explain the wrench angles to "sarrcho", I realized the #1 line is easy the get
a better angle . This would give a different "feel" of torque. May be easy to over tighten. The rule of thumb in plumbing is "just enough to not leak",
you can tighten more but it's hard to recover from "to tight".

On the element "ring part". Is that the copper crush ring? Two layer, one
side wider? I can pull an element from a spare IP if you'd like.

Glad you mentioned the turbo boost. I don't have any w/turbo, so I haven't
had to consider it's roll in fuel delivery. I read about tweaking the wastegate
on a 617 for higher performance.
Tweaking the Mercedes 617 Turbo Diesel

If you are confident your injectors are good, and the turbo is delivering, then wastegate and IP. "Just thinking out loud"

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] That Raw Fuel Smell

....Is what got me to finally address the weepy IP element but , I also looked into the trunk and discovered that somehow (ahem) a nearly full if opened bottle of Power Service' Diesel Kleen had worked loose from the right side trunk well and landed on it's side and had leaked out all over the trunk....

Sigh .

As soon as I had the element leak stopped , I unloaded the trunk , removed the drain plugs and got some cleaner , a clean rag and the garden hose and washed out the entire trunk , it was amazingly filthy and oily.....

When  it was clean I dried it as best I could in the twilight with a rag , loaded in only the spare tire , jack and lug wrench and wheel chock , headed off to SWMBO's house noticing the lack of fuel stench .

Arriving at her place I grabbed the flashlight and popped the hood , the IP remains leak free , I really need to find an image of the IP's top discharge elements to ensure I know how they're supposed to fit .

I also need to wash everything I took out of the trunk , like the plastic side panels and carpet .

I hope when I retire I won't have so many 20 + hour days .

-Nate
