Most tank valve manufacturers do not recommend using such harsh house hold cleaners in the holding tanks. Those cleaners shorten the life of the rubber seals on both sides of the opening valve. Chuck B

Back in 1992, when I left the Silicon Valley, my wife and I ran into a
90 year old fella that had time on his hands.
He was a very cool guy and we parked next to him for about a month
while our house sold. In that month, I learned so much from him about
full timing, etiquette, little fixes, Ford Chassis issues, and other
neat ideas. After a while, I began to think he was a genius. Us
youngin's can learn a lot from raw experience, esp. from a guy who is
willing to teach.
To the point: I asked him one day what he used for black tank
treatments. He went to his side compartment and out he came with a
bottle of PineSol. "Use this each time you drain your tanks.
3/4's of a bottle goes into the black tank and the rest into the Gray
tank.
I have followed this ritual ever since. When we take our rig into
storage, for months, I will add about 5 gallons of water to the black
tank on the drive back and this invariably cleans off the tank sensors
and there is NEVER a foul odor from either thank.
Works like a champ. Recently, we switched to a generic Pine
Cleaner...and it's half price and available at any outlet, dollar
store and so on.
Recently I found a second wonderful use for this product. If your RV
sits in hot weather for a while, and you are not in the coach, the
toilet water will slowly evaporate. That leaves a bit of a ring.
Also, sometimes contaminates will affect the ball valve and leave some
color behind.
In either case, I pour about a 1/2 cup of pine cleaner into the bowl,
and fill the toilet bowl about 3/4's full. This cleans better than
any other option (short of using a sponge), and it never eats into the
surface at all.
I am not pushing this just sharing my experience. We never buy
commercial treatments from RV outlets for our tanks.
It turns out the good ole Pine Cleaner is quite the stuff.
