Not being an owner I thought I'd Google up this problem. Seems unreasonable that MB would have allowed this problem to go on for so long. The link shows the replacement. Comment about using the proper MB buffers with correct shore rating for the rubber and making sure the heat protection cups are fitted is good. The underside isn't shown but if it is open, a suitably shaped piece of steel rod underneath at the rear welded in might work. A short piece on the outside around the mount also probably good. 3/16" rod stiff enough. The filter housing itself is cantilevered out on quite a long arm so adding any weight at the end is not a good idea. It's all down to vibration v resonance.
I suspect that there will be some owners who will say that they have never had the problem. What's their story?

Actually now that I think about it, the last one I repaired was on an 84 300D that lasted at least 2  years.  Unfortunately that car had the first 2' of the front end taken off by a 20 YR old who ran a red light while texting.  I replaced it with an 83 300D that has 97,000 miles on it and that one is still original.  I can't remember what is in the 85 300SD, but I probably did some reinforcing on that one.   Basically I overlaid the area with narrow flat plate that is held down by the two mounting bolts and was probably welded to the original broken arm.  I usually just went from the mounting bolts over the broken area as far as the scrap I was using went.   I probably went  as close as possible to rubber mount.  Since the lower mounting bolt is a PITA to deal with, I may have bolted the reinforcement to the broken part of the  arm while the bracket was still on the car rather than welding it. If I had the bracket off, I would have welded the reinforcement to the bracket.  Over the years I've done several.  Its a case where I did whatever worked with the materials that I had on hand at the moment.  Sorry for the fuzziness, but at 81 I'm not retaining the details well.
