Martha shifts smooth as silk. Mary shifts with clunks (for many years) - someday I will look into it.

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] hard downshift when in D (from 4-3 gear)
I am experiencing a hard up and now down (a hard thud) when my car gets shifted into 4th gear. the thud on the downshift occurs right around 18 mph (i guess when the car is set to shift down from 4-3?).
I noticed that if i only keep my car in the lower gear (up to third) everything runs smooth, (i guess this is ok for up to 40 mph or so??) but i would like to know if and how i can fix the 4 gear thud?
could this be fixed with an adjustment to the vacuum modulator? Also is it ok to put this repair (adjustment) off and drive the car in the first 3 gears for a more enjoyable ride without damaging the tranny?
Thanks folks for any input! other than that and the darn radio not working everything is good.
