[diesel_mercedes] Re: Re : Good Parenting

Trish, I'm envious of that part of your upbringing!

Even though my mother and my aunt tell me NOW that they were maintaining their air-cooled VW bugs back in the day, I never got "exposed". Though I did have the "bug" ;) and always wanted to know how to take care of them (et al) myself.

My first car was a VW super beetle...bought in '86 for $500 (pretty sure I paid too much) and I immediately started having some trouble with it. Wish I had known there were manuals you could buy :(

Now my stepfather expresses the same wistful regret...that he always wished he had learned more about maintaining and repairing cars (he likes em british...but honestly he's a great guy! lol) and bought me the latest issue of Diesel Power magazine, partly out of humor, partly to bond over cars. sweet.

I don't plan on having kids, but this coming year I've got a nephew on the way, and at least 2 close friends who are due...I've got my eye on the next generation...and plenty of time to learn stuff to tell them!

[diesel_mercedes] Re: The right wrench for the valve adjustment - To Chip

Well...now you know at least one woman who thought about it...and tried it...me ;)

Though I was missing a tool to keep the valve collars from spinning (either the OEM one or a bigger screwdriver), I'm already planning on doing my next one in a year.

Luckily, I have a great mechanic who bailed me out...for only $126.15 (that's with tax)

Now on to brakes and fuel leaks n stuff....

I don't think a valve job is all that easy, with all things considered and some major things can be screwed up too. How long have I been adjusting valves on a diesel Mercedes? Since 1976. Also done VW's, Subarus ,Chevy six's, and a bunch of diesel generators, I don't think any of them were easy. Maybe simple after I got the hang of it but still a whole lot going on under there. Don't take this job too lightly, learn to do it carefully. Would I ever pay anyone else to do it? Hell no. Max P.S. dealers have the wrenches too, thats where I got mine back in 76
