[diesel_mercedes] Oil Changes & Stuff

 

What a thrill. It is time for my fall oil changes, and other assorted things. First, I categorically want to declare that my LA to Vegas and back to LA trip proved that the axle CV joint replacement on Mary cured her "whang, bang, clang" issue. The new solenoid (and starter) cured the intermittent "click, click" non start issue too.

Today, I park Mary & Martha side by side and change their oil and filters. While underneath Martha, I will take a hard look at her Neutral Safety Switch as we are not starting in Park, only in Neutral with some wiggling involved.

And, here comes the sun - so it must be time to do all this stuff instead of just talking about it.

As a follow up to Rob - if your engine is out, change everything you can (hoses, wiring, mounts, etc.).  Life is too short to not take advantage of the engine being out of the car. In other words, what a great opportunity to change, replace, fix, improve, a ton of things without being on your back with oil dripping in your face and your hand hitting a hot muffler.

There's a few things that are easy to replace when the engine's out,
like the oil cooler lines. They can be replaced while the engine is in,
yet quite a PITA. The the lines go from the oil filter canister to the
oil cooler, by the radiator. Check these lines before installing the
engine, especially the rubber parts for cracks or weeping.
