Re: [diesel_mercedes] Alternator out and tested good...now what?

You remember their sales slogan "If you get an accurate reading, it's a Fluke"

Well what do you know.  Took it to my mechanic and it's now 13.75.  I just scratch my head.  When I put the "good" alternator back in I still got battery voltage.  I guess the drive on the freeway to the mechanic must have loosened something up.  Maybe the brushes had to wear in a bit.  By the time I got home it was at 13.45vdc.  I'm keeping my volt meter with me though.  I'll be testing it quite frequently until I'm sure it's not a fluke......Fluke tests for flukes.   Lawrence Rhodes.

I did clean the connections to the alternator.  Two white and one blue.  The two white are larger and protrude further. They are both positive.  The shorter blue wire is negative. Lawrence Rhodes

I got serious and my model is different. 1980 must be before the junction box on the top in front of the battery.  I followed my wire bundles and I think it is below the battery positive terminal just under the intake manifold.  It's on the body of the wheel well all covered in rubber then it runs to the starter.  All in thick rubber.  Lawrence Rhodes....

I found a picture of the Junction box.  Three connections.  It sits just in front of the battery on the inside wheel housing.  My TD was wrecked there.  There is some buckling there some holes where is should be and nothing close that looks like it.  Are the earlier W123's different?  Is there an alternate location for the junction box?  Lawrence Rhodes

Lawrence ;

Some years it's on the lower edge of the engine compartment to the side of the alternator .

The thinner (1.5 MM) red wire from the positive cable goes to it .

What are the colors of the various wires leading to the alternator ? .

I saw a picture of the junction box with the cover off. (1984 300D) Three connections.  Right in front of the battery on the fender.  My 1980 300TD doesn't have it there.  Could it be buried beneath the air cleaner?  Would the big cable from the battery go there?  Lawrence Rhodes

Does the red light come on when first you turn the key , before you crank the engine ? .

I got the alternator tested at O'Reillys and it passed.  13.5 with a top of 14.1.  I couldn't find any terminal on the passenger side.  Couldn't even trace the wires.  Too much stuff in the way.  Is it possible all the dirt and grime and oil and what not has fouled the contacts?  It's pretty dirty.  I did get battery voltage from all three wires that go to the alternator.  Is there a procedure to trouble shoot alternator problems in the wiring harness?  Is there a fuse I might have missed?  Lawrence Rhodes
