Oh and the locksmith said he could not do it because it was double sided. And then the next mobile locksmith said he couldn't do it because it was too old. I'm not sure if either answer is correct it seems they both aren't quite right.

Before drilling , maybe have a locksmith take a look at it ? .

Once opened it's easy to remove the lock cylinder proper .

Silly question : have you removed the rear seat , disconnected the green vacuum pipe and applied vacuum to it whilst some one tries opening the trunk ? .

I was thinking because I cannot open the trunk (its locked) on my 77280SE about taking the lock from my 71 220D and installing it on the 77 280SE.  Does anyone know if the lock is compatible?

Because you can't lift up the back seats and no amount of lubricating oil has worked I am at the point of drilling the lock out.
