Look up the one for the year & model your engine came from .
Always use Metric belts whenever possible , they'll fit better & last longer too .
Mercedes' are Engineering designed cars so be *very* careful when trying to adjust or remove any belts ~ they tend to have WAYY too many bolts , nuts and screw typ adjusters making it easy for the average Mechanic (ahem) to twist off , round off , snap off or otherwise ruin expen$ive parts when all that was needed was more time and patience/observation to discover how easy and simple it was top get the GD!#$@~!! thing to move enough to slip the belt off or on....
FWIW , now , before your old belts die , look at them and write down the part #'s on a nice clean slip of paper and put it in the glovebox in the registration envelope...

This group provides a forum for owners and operators of diesel powered motorhomes and 5th wheel tractors to discuss mechanical issues, regulatory issues (US, Canada), ownership, insurance, campground accommodations, trip reports/suggestions, and other topics relevant to large RVs and the people who drive them.

[diesel_mercedes] Max's Troubles
Hang in there Max ! we'll miss you whilst you're gone , will greet you when you return .
I'm amazed that no one wants your two cars ~ I asked SWMBO if she wanted one but she's fond of our '82 240D and wants to save up and have the engine and tranny rebuilt . This will of course co$t far more than both of your cars combined but , if it makes her happy , then I will be too and hopefully I'll address the few remaining
' might as wells ' , new windshield and fix the recalcitrant RR door's vacuum lock .

They are twins so you don't even have to license both cars, just switch the

going into the hospital soon, I will be on crutches all summer, cant drive

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Ventilation
You have a row of horizontal HVAC buttons , correct ? .
Push the ' EC ' one , that's # 4 going right , then push the top fan button , after the engine runs a few minutes the fan should come on loudly and you'll get a serious blast of hot air from the dash vents as it blows out the accumulated heat , some dust too .
If this works , *gently* press the middle , translucent fan button to make the vent fan moderate it's speeds depending on the inside temperature .
If nothing happens , try depressing the ' DEF ' button ~ this will force the defroster on full tilt (default) & blast you with heat too , just do this as a last gasp test thing if nothing else works .
The flax discs go at each end of the drive shaft where U-Joints go on your truck .
Yes , they can be improperly assembled by the DPO (who , BTW , needs a serious beating and his pants & boots confiscated & BURNED) .
Best thing is to drive the car to a shop with a hoist and have it put up as far as it'll go so you can walk 'round underneath it with a flashlight and note pad .

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel Milage Check '82 240D Auto Some AC Used
352 miles , all SWMBO & boys driving , the AC is now stuck on full as one of them pounded the temp. dial to death in the dash because they didn't like her turning it off =8-^ (anyone got a spare dial ?)
21.6 MPG's , it still runs nicely although the engines @ 300,000 + miles , is fairly tired .
Interestingly ,the Diesel Fuel was $4.17 /Gal and RUG was $4.37 /Gal .

I know it's not called a U joint on a MB but Kevin can't remember what it is called and I know you know what we're talking about...
Anyhow I have a thud or vibration whether I'm accelerating or not.
Kevin wonders if it matters how he put the transmission etc together. He says there's a "triangle shaped thing" he said on "normal" cars it's the u joint, he hooked up and he wonders if it could have been put on wrong???
Other than that it's rather smooth driving! :)
Really, really need to get that fan for the front of the car so I have a/c...it's getting HOT here...today hovering around 90.
OH and since I only have 2 functioning windows...curious..how far down are the back windows supposed to go? Mine does not go all the way down.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: U joint & windows
Next time I drive I'll record. Doesn't matter if I'm accelerating or not once I'm in the 55-70 range. It smooths out at 75. Tranny mount should be tight, but I think now that I've put nearly 2K on it bumped up and down this driveway a few times it wouldn't be a bad idea to check bolts. I can't remember when it started.
I'll dig into the windows one of these days. It's going to be one of "those" projects fixing what someone else "fixed".
If the flex disks were in good shape and the bolts tightened, they
should be good to go. When you say Thud, is this a repeated noise, only
going fast, once and a while throughout the range, or just once when
shifting up or down? I ask, as the the tranny on these cars can thud
pretty well when they're out of adjustment, or there's a vac leak.
There's also a tranny mount that can go out, yet if you just dealt with
that it should be good too.
On the windows, like others have said, remove the panels and see how the
window functions, maybe something is loose and binding inside, needs
lube, or a good cleaning.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: U joint & windows
Oh I forgot you were up there! Gosh you're lucky that it's still so nice up there. It's barely past 8am and already over 70 according to the thermo on my deck. Gonna be near 90 again today. Everything is brown and grass fires have already started! Two of my 75' hoses blew this week! (they've been repaired about all they can, thankfully I buy the life time warranty type and keep the warranty & receipt so I'll be off to Home Depot one of these days) Had to fill a 5gal bucket with water then hike to the chicken coop and talk myself into lifting it up to the hook around 7' off the ground to hang it without me wearing it! I did it! Whew. And just for more exercise I lugged a 50lb bag of feed down there too! OK so it wasn't for more exercise, it had to get down there somehow, or they would be eating out of my back seat!
Have a great weekend!

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Gotta have a belt first!
Hey the rope trick is a good idea! Thanks Bobby!
Trish, Not only do you have to worry about length, but width, and angle. If you have a belt that you think might be right, twist it around so you can see how it fits in the compressor pulley. The belt should fit in the groove so that the top sits a little bit out of the groove. Obviously, the angle of the belt should match the angle of the pulley. Now you have two of the three specs you need. If no one comes up with the magic part number, put a piece of rope around the compressor pulley and the drive pulley and mark the rope where the ends cross. (Actually, you will probably want to get Kevin to do all that.) Take the belt and rope to Carquest or NAPA and they can find a match, if they are in the mood. Good luck. Bobby
