But mine is the model with the turbo charge and it has only two doors!
Does Hurts make a shifted for this model?

This group provides a forum for owners and operators of diesel powered motorhomes and 5th wheel tractors to discuss mechanical issues, regulatory issues (US, Canada), ownership, insurance, campground accommodations, trip reports/suggestions, and other topics relevant to large RVs and the people who drive them.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: 300TD 1980 Wagon. Only high defrost
If the fan blows out of the wrong holes, it's vacuum. If you have to punch the defrog button to get the fan going, and then it subsequently continues to run in the other settings after you get it started, that's an electrical problem with the fan. I think the defrog button sends the largest spike of juice available to the fan motor which kicks it going, and then it will keep spinning on kinetic energy and less juice from there. From what I have read in the peachpart forums, this is frequently caused by worn out brushes in the motor.
I emailed back and forth with George today. He has brushes for $29 a set.

And would this have anything to do with the light that stays on? Or am I looking at two possible causes?

Is this the "voltage regulator" I've been reading about?
And would this have anything to do with the light that stays on? Or am I looking at two possible causes?

[diesel_mercedes] 83 300SD Update: New V-belts and driveshaft secure
Picked Betty (83 300SD) up from my mechanic's today, and she's now a much safer ride. I also continue to be really happy with the service and support (as an eager but inexperienced enthusiast) I'm receiving. He had no problem using a couple of parts I had on hand (small stuff that I hadn't gotten around to yet). If you're ever stranded near Santa Fe and need a mechanic for your Benz (or other euro auto), call on Tom at European Autowerks.
Anyhoo...here's the list of what got done:
* Replaced 4 accessory drive belts
* Replace driveshaft support and bearing + install shaft boot
And for no extra charge, he took care of a bunch of little stuff per my request:
* Install missing bolt on rear flex disk
* Inspect flex discs = OK (yay!)
* Install vac modulator cap (I had this in my trunk, hadn't gotten to it yet)
* Loosened my 19mm(???) hex nut in my oil pan so I can change it myself
* Replaced exhaust hangers w donuts I supplied (not the tasty kind)
* Removed pesky P/S clamp and replaced with one I had in trunk
He also checked out my fuel leak at cyl #2...didn't go away after I put in new return lines. His verdict was that there's a leak in the injector itself.
Best of all, he gave me the name and number of his PaP guy...basically the only place in Santa Fe that really has these old diesels. Can't wait!
Tomorrow I'll try to get the P/S maintenance done, and hopefully this weekend I can do my own dang oil change :) in the near future I'd like to replace the bent up pan, non OE drain bolt (and gasket, natch).
And of course I'm still planning on hunting gremlins and cleaning off the engine so I can have Brian over for lunch ;)
Ok, back to drooling on the craftsman site. (And making plans to hit the pawn shops...thanks, Nate!)

Caitliin: Nate is right. A faulty regulator on the alternator will drain the battery because the regulator is always connected to the battery. It goes through a diode but those can fail and start draining your battery. There is a plug on the alternator that is a pain to get from above but is easy from below. It has a clip on it you will need to deal with. Go easy with it. If the light goes out then it's the alternator. This is the best test I can think of for proving the alternator is the cause. Alan, I had to look that up...but I'm glad I did ;) There's copies for as low as $4.24 shipped to be had....
I think a future picnic is in order

Hi Chuck,
Sorry...I added the year and model to the thread subject :)
I think this car spent some QT in Arizona...and lots of rubber and plastic are in bad shape, including around the wiring. (and the dust inside the engine compartment is insane...I'm slowly cleaning it as I work on different areas). So one of my working theories is I might have a short somewhere...
Things on the list to try (gathered here and elsewhere):
1) unplug the alternator (with fuses out)
2) unplug the glow plug relay (with fuses out)
3) try the "remove fuses" test with a voltmeter (instead of a test light)
4) unplug the door light...maybe see if symptom shows up elsewhere
5) look for loose ground wires
I might be missing a few... :)
