[diesel_mercedes] Re: 240 blowing alternators

If it just stopped charging & didn't make any death rattle , just replace the voltage regulator , it's under $20 for the better Bosch branded one , I'm on the road else I'd have the specific part # to get but others will have and post it for you , be aware the parts counter guy will try to B.S. you into taking the crappo ones he sells , be smart & order up two Bosch ones and save the second one .

FWIW , many " rebuilders " now bead blast the rotor and this roughs up the slip rings where the brushes ride so they wear out rather quickly . if you have a low buck alternator that died , try replacing just the voltage regulator as it comes with the new brushes as part of it , once the old brushes have worn out the slip rings have been polished smooth again so the new reglator should last longer .

I really cannot say to many good things about the Bosch branded regulator , it actually makes the wimpy original 55 ampere alternator work correctly and charge up to 14 volts much of the time .

Remember : _ALWAYS_ disconnect the ground cable off the battery before any electrical repair work ! I like to remove the battery & soap & water wash it then leave on the _lowest_ charge rating whilst I clean the accumulated leaves out of the battery box then replace the voltage regulator so everything is tip-top when I button it back up .
