I'm with you, Gert! Our '94 Allegro Bay has hydraulic brakes, and
they're still OK after 105,000 miles. And you are also right about
airplane brakes. I'm a retired aircraft mechanic, and you'll never
find brakes anything like aircraft disc brakes on a vehicle. The
airplanes have a stack -- usually at least four or five discs which
are splined to the inside of the wheel, and between each disc is a
stator which is splined to the axle, with anywhere from six to a
dozen hydraulic pistons squeezing the whole assembly together. But
that kind of airplane brake is noisy, because the disc rotors clunk
against the splines inside the wheels.
Airplane brakes last a long time. The tires wear pretty fast,
because the airplane touches down at around 140 mph, and the tire is
actually sliding for the first few feet of every landing, but the
brakes may go a thousand landings or more.
I've never heard of air brakes on airplane wheels. Maybe it would be
easier to think of them as aerodynamic devices -- planes are drag
devices -- imagine opening your car doors wide open at 70 mph. And
those air brakes are hydraulically operated, too. The spoilers you
see come up on top of the wings add aerodynamic drag as well as
disturbing the lift, so that the wheel brakes can slow the airplanes.
