Yea well, no hurries at this point. Already been a long time. I can get brass toothbrushes. Seems like Nate thinks the pistons are stainless. They are heavy and seem like it. First time for me to get into calipers. I always assumed there would be o-rings to seal but these are truly pistons. just a machined fit. Starting to get nervous about fire. Smoke from BC overtook us today, again, and sounds like everyone is in for the long haul and fires break out every day somewhere, you just hope its not you. Max
They are probably chrome plated. Hope they are OK.
If you have the kits and everything else is good, mount the caliper in a vice, insert the square sealing ring and install the boot. The easiest way to get the piston in through the boot is to use a blow gun through the brake line port while holding the piston over the hole. The air will escape around the edges of the piston, causing the boot to temporarily expand. You then quickly press the piston down into the bore. Once you get it square in the hole, you can let up  on the air as the boot closes up around the sides of the piston. Use a wooden hammer handle to bump the piston all the way in.
It takes a little practice, and be careful that you don't use too much air pressure so that the piston snaps up and pinches your fingers. You don't need to ask me how I know that.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Fuel filter housing discovery

Changed the spin on fuel filter today. Still starts hard, but not quite
as bad and more pep. Ordered a pair of 14mm wrenches off Ebay
#390207814207 for about $6.50 for the pair, including shipping. If you
are looking for some, there you go. Just need bending. KD Tools is fair
'nuff quality.

Notes: #4 injector seeping fuel, fuel return hoses original, dodgy. Next
step, adjust valves, renew injectors.

Fuel primer pump leaks when it is being used, seems weak and weepy. Will
replace that too. You OK with the Bosch black pumps?

Finally got my pistons out of the calipers.(front) I had to go get help and it was a bear. I did not want to use grease. I tried to use my nozzle injector tester but I could not find a pipe adapter in my town. Ended up using solvent and air and hammer whacks. They are very gummed up. Now to figure how to clean them up. Parts are on the way. I figured I would learn something doing this the hard way. After seeing how gummed up these things are I am gonna do the rears even tho they are not worn out yet. I'm betting they could use to be cleaned up also. Front turned out to be ATE rears Bendix.Max
