The 77 240D let me down today. I went to leave work tonight and the
first turn of the key gave me a glow plug light. A short crank and it
tried to start. Went to re-run the glow plugs and NO LIGHT. Haven't seen
one since. Start by checking fuse 14?
What is the best way to determine where the open circuit is, or whether
my relay went south? I have one of the pricey metal can ones under the
dash. If it's dead, how easy is it to convert to a new style relay? I am
going to put fast glow plugs in anyways.

Today I had time to do some preliminary checks. terminal 4 on the relay is the switched input through, I thing, fuse 14. Fuse was good and I did find 12 volts when the key was on. I pried the relay open and found it to be in visibly good condition. Points were bent, so I straightened them just a little, but no arcing or pitting. I saw the light flicker a few times as I fiddled.
Would dead glow plugs cause no light? Big fuse is intact, but looks old. When I go to the pencil glow plugs, I will put a new one in.
