[diesel_mercedes] OT VW Beetle TDI Oil Change

Hello listers. Today, I finally had the time and equipment to change the oil in my Beetle TDI 15Kmi. I set up my topsider, took out the dipstick, and pumped it up. It worked flawlessly! To get to the oil filter, I had to remove the decorative engine cover which is held in place by a ball and socket mount in each corner, I was greeted by an engine covered with wires and hoses going every which way. So where's the dang oil filter??? After a few minutes of feeling around and a few more minutes on Google, I found an informative post describing the exact location and the 32mm socket needed for removal. Luckily, Dad gave me all his tools once he could no longer work on cars, so I found the ratchet, socket, and the appropriate extension. It had to be long enough for the ratchet to clear the cooling line just above the filter housing. It broke loose easily, but I had to finish the last few turns by hand since I needed clearance to remove the socket. I had to be careful when removing the filter from the spring-loaded mechanism that holds it onto the inside of the cap since the plastic teeth can break off. This went off without a hitch. I then lubricated and inserted the provided filter cap o-ring and mounted the new filter. The installation of the filter also went well. The kit I bought came with a 5.0l jug of Ravenol 5w/30 full synthetic motor oil that meets the VW 507.00 specification. I put in the 4.3l (4.54qt of oil and fired it up. The engine sounded quieter and smoother. I'm sure that the next one will take half the time if I don't forget by the time I reach the 10Kmi interval.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Just do the math.

Eventually, most of these old diesel Mercedes will be gone due to attrition, and the members of this list will move on to other cars, or age out of driving altogether, yet until then we'll keep driving these beasties. I don't think we're driving these cars just to get from A to B. I've been driving my '85 300D for 11 yrs, and think it'll be good for another decade, as it's still young at 211k, 31yrs.

If you add up all the money you spent on acquisition, maintaining, fuel you will find electrics very attractive. They are also clean air vehicles which our beloved Mercedes are not. How’s the Leaf forum?   Must be interesting talking about swapping out amps.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Diesel HPR (was Monthly Vintage Car Meet & Greet)

Nate, please keep us posted on your results with this new fuel.  When I lived in San Francisco a few years ago I ran B100 in my 240 with great results, but it did take a bit of investment to change over all the fuel lines to viton material to stop them from deteriorating.  I've been reading up on this Diesel HPR you're using, which is made through a different chemical process than Biodiesel, but haven't found anything about whether it affects rubber.  I have read that it meets the ULSD diesel standard and can be used in any diesel (not the case for B100) so I presume it does not affect the rubber fuel lines.

Sounds like this is promising, and I sure hope it cures your fungus problem for good!

BTW, I miss my MB diesel and I'm looking at buying another one early next year.  I'm thinking W124 this time, as it's getting harder and harder to find a nice W123 for a reasonable price.

Best to all from hot & humid Charlotte, NC.

Indeed it always is and was .

More Vintage American cars than usual this time .

Only *one* old Mercedes..... .

I got there a few hours early and had coffee , read E-Mail , wrote some Tech Support , ready my book etc. until others began rolling in right around 9AM .

I stayed a couple hours then SWMBO called me to say she was going off galevanting with her Daughter, this meant I no longer had to go to her house so I left  to do some things, ran out of fuel going uphill as I approached a red light, backed to the curb , cleaned the tiny bit of crud out of the intake screen, added my two gallons of reserve fuel and drove it to Arcadia and filled it with HPR brand Bio - Fuel .

The intake screen remains clear as glass so I hope to begin driving the '82 240D and working though it's fungus issue .

This Bio-Diesel certainly makes the engine run smoother ~ it still idles too slowly (in spite of multiple speed adjustments) and is sluggish off idle but as soon as it passes 2,000 RPM the boost comes on very smoothly and strongly and it has great pickup and sharp throttle response , just for grins I floored it on the freeway and was rewarded with 100 MPH and accelerating with less than full pedal to the metal .

I'm aware that part of this re found power is due to the
overflow valve I recently replaced , I'm still trying to hook up an internal pressure gauge .
