Re: [diesel_mercedes] Coolant running out of 116

Well if that's the deal, then not overflow tank or hose , have to be heater or hose running to heater. Max

Not a good description but it sounds like it could just be the hose to the overflo tank.? If it is it could mean the radiator needs flushing or replaced?  How about a picture? Max

From what you're describing, it sounds like coolant is coming out of where the a/c condensation drains out.  That would indicate a possible leaking heater core, or, more likely, a short hose that connects the heater core(s) in the passenger compartment to the cooling system under the hood.

You can get a better idea of what goes on in there from the factory service manual at the W116.org site:

We have a problem with my wife's 1980 300sd leaking coolant. Yesterday, she called and said that the car was was overheating. After numerous stops to refill with water, we finally got her home. Found that the water was coming out of what appears to be an overflow tube on the passenger side of the firewall. This tube is 1-2 inches wide and outlet is made to remain closed but will allow fluid to come out if needed. Don't know how water could get from a closed system into this "overflow" tube. My Haynes book does not show anything and I could not find any pictures/diagrams on the internet. Any suggestion or advice on how this works or how to fix this problem would be appreciated. Thanks Tom.

Yea, but is that just the pressure that can be changed by shims? Max

Pretty much yes .

I was reading the Factory Service Manual and it says they want me to lap the sealing surface of the injector body halves , this of course would tend to raise the pop pressure point....

You're also supposed to clean the disassembled injector parts in a sonic cleaner , I happen to have a small one a grateful Customer gave me ,  then you're supposed to clean the nozzles with brass brush bristles (brass only !)

I'm not sure I want to get that involved with it all , so far I've just cleaned and tested bunches until I get a set as necessary for that time , then I give the other injectors away to others who'll overhaul/service/rebuild them .

So............, you adjust the pressure by adding or removing shims? Then re-test till you get it within specs?  Are they different thickness? On China Diesel all you did was turn a screw. Max

  BUT....

I'm pretty sure the non-turbo 300D uses the same injectors as the 240D (and probably 220D and 200D, Too).
