Right on, If you can grab some of the crud, try to dissolve it. Biodiesel (methyl ester) would be my first choice since it's said to do that in the rest of the system. Note, this is just to soak and clean the IP. Here in Ohio I have seen some "green" graffiti remover that contains methyl ester as a solvent.
Other thing to try would be acetone and gun bore cleaner. My favorite is home brew "Ed's Red", (ATF, acetone, mineral spirits). Search it for % online.
Diesel Purge is probably not the solvent for this cleaning.
The diesel purge contains a small 3% I think chem... how can I say this,
That make the combustion more violent to clean the tips of carbon. One of the things that resulted in no liquids when flying.

You haven't done a Diesel Purge recently?! For shame....
It would be interesting to see what, if any, effect it has on an IP in your condition. Maybe you should try it for the sake of science.
I was kinda kidding about the veg oil. Kinda....

I have not done a Diesel Purge since before I took the tank and sender apart last Summer , you may remember the amazing pictures of awful fungus growing inside the fuel sender .
I know of no where in L.A. to buy commercially done veggie Diesel and after veggie oil having destroyed my engine once , no way do I want to chance any home brew foolishness .

The circular piece of the elements is very snug fitting , I bought a small telescopic magnet to try and help fish them out the next time I'm in where .
The last time I took # 1 injector pipe off , I used starting fluid to try and blow the crud out , I know there's more underneath the piece I can yet get out .
Right now I still have the Wagon's doors apart and am also working on Tom's old 1979 Dodge D-200 crew cab truck...
No rest for the weary , right ? =8-) .
