Recently picked up a 1980 300sd and it has gold color on the hood ornament and on the model numbers on the trunk. Is this an indication of a special model or nothing at all? Thanks.

[diesel_mercedes] Frozen door locks

Correct ~

The MoPar stuff is graphite in an evaporating liquid carrier , it's designed to penetrate frozen exhaust heat risers and get them loosened up then dry and keep them lubricated in extreme working conditions .

ALWAYS lubricate locks until the graphite stuff burps out ! this helps ensure the graphite gets into the nether regions of the lock cylinder to prevent it from freezing .

I've tried Lock-ease Catalog # LE-5. This is a graphite in a thin
evaporating fluid. I have used so much that graphite is running down
the outside of the door.

Liquid Wrench deicer LLD03 seems to work a lot better.

I've had to use this daily, or even twice a day(morning going to work,
and evening returning home).

I'm starting to think it may be the door's interior moisture seal may be
shot. It may be the warm moist heated air is getting into the door
panel and condensing on the cold door lock. I'll keep some notes to see
when it freezes up. If it freezes only after driving with the heat on,
while it's cold, then it may be condensation. If it freezes only parked
in the driveway without running, water is leaking into the lock some how.

I keep the cans of lock deicer in the trunk. I learned the lesson not
to store them in the car.

I'll look for the Mopar spray. The part number you supplied looks like
rust penetrant from internet searches. Hopefully this will be a short
winter.

[diesel_mercedes] Electrical Testing

No way around it ,if you're going to maintain it your ownself , you need to buy some tools .

Me , I use cheap antique tools I bought at yard sales decades ago but the $5 Harbor Freight analog (means needle gauge not digital) works just fine , you'll be wanting to extend the test leads , if you're broke ass poor grab the zip cord off a junked TV set or lamp....

Max ;

I use it off and on , I prefer the 10W 40 just because but thinner oils work better and most importantly get up out of the sump and circulating faster so they help prevent engine wear , 90 % of which occurs at initial startup , why over the road engines outlast city use engines.....

Pretty much _any_ modern , multi - viscosity DIESEL RATED oil is orders of magantude better than the Din based crap these engines were designed to run on....

Different brands but wallmart tends to have the best pricing on gallons of Diesel rated oil .

I personally don't like to shop @ wallmart unless it's an emergency or I'm traveling .
