[diesel_mercedes] Sluggish Acelleration

O.K. to begin :

Engine @ hot idle in neutral , park brake firmly set , disconnect the banjo bolt connecting the plastic pipe to the side of the alda valve , put your finger over one side of the open banjo fitting and touch it to the open alda valve ~ the engine *must* instantly speed up as the alda senses the 1 ~ 2 # of pressure .

If not , test to see there's some wind bowing out the open pipe . if not follow the pipe backwards until you find the blockage .

NOTE : DO NOT use carby / brake cleaners ! they both attak the delicate old and brittle plastic .

Use Aerosol starting fluid (Ether) instead .

Look at the plastic fuel intake screen ~ if it's translucent it's JUNK , go to NAPA etc. and buy TWO ~ NAPA has a $5 one , also the very same thing for $1.50 but you have to ask for it , don't hassle the guy , just buy it .

Pep Boys also stocks the clear plastic intake screens , you should always carry a spare one and learn how to clean/change it on the roadside or gas station .

Thanks to everyone for their comments, suggestions and advice. Finally got around to replacing the neutral safety switch (had 40 mph winds here in southern Arizona the last two days) and drove it to town and back (30 miles) and everything seems to be working fine. Shut it off two different times and it started right up. I will take Nate's advice and replace the solenoid. Nate, we just love the car and almost everything works, at least most of the time. Still have to tackle the jumping temp gauge, right side windows (motors work but do not operate the regulator) and the super slow acceleration. This car is much slower than our 81 300SD. Cleaned the banjo bolt to the ALDI valve but not any better. At least it gives me something to do with all my spare time. HA HA. Thanks again and you can be assured that I will have more questions/problems.
