Re: [diesel_mercedes] Dying battery. Alternator light didn't come on!

One thing to look at is the voltage regultor in the alternator.  the brushes do wear.  It's removable without removing the alternator.  If the brushes are badly worn, or missing, the preferred replacement is Bosch, but any one that is readily available will work.

My 300 TD was warm and running fine.  I turned around to get my son.  Noticed my power windows were a little slow.....I had just started the car and driven a mile or so when I picked my son up.  Noticed blinker lights were dim.  Drove another two miles to a store near my house.  Shopped.  Then the car wouldn't start....luckily my house was down hill.  My son pushed me out of the parking spot and off to home we went.  Parked a half block from the house.  Took out the battery.  It measured 12.26vdc....hmmm should have started.  This morning it was fully charged.  Now what to do?  Is there a fuse involved?  Why didn't the alternator light come on?  Obviously we are not getting enough voltage.  The battery is being drawn down by systems.  Lawrence Rhodes
