No one's really sure just what kicking the accelerator before starting these old diesels does, but it does something. The procedure I outlined is actually from the operator's manual. Or close to it....

Mark in Lakewood, what does pumping the accelerator pedal achieve in a diesel? Is it a habit from carb cars you have driven/drive?
