[diesel_mercedes] Re: Voltage on 71 220D

This goes for all batteries.  The voltage will vary.  After starting for a brief period the voltage may exceed 14 volts.  14.4 would work.  After the alternator makes up for the energy used to start the car stress on the alternator goes down and the voltage regulator puts out around 13.8 or so.  Then as you use power for any 12v need the alternator gives that power or the battery does and the alternator kicks up the voltage to keep the battery charged and supply need amps to devices.  So when you stop your car theoretically you should have a fully charged battery.  This is why you turn off all lights and devices before stopping your engine.  Modern vehicles batteries will not last a long.  They run lights after the car is stopped draining the battery.  So when you start it's in a state of less charge and over time this will ruin the battery quicker.  Just an advantage of the old Mercedes but that said in Europe there are laws mandating parking lights be used.  That wears out the battery too.  Lawrence Rhodes...
