Re: [diesel_mercedes] RE: Fuel Economy Check '82 240D Auto

Ha, Ha, I wonder what your Priuss will look like in 30 plus years. But I wonder some of the same stuff some days. In my town gas has gone down to 3.42 while diesel has been winterized and was 4.12 yesterday. I think the off road I got was 3.84. There are some of these cars to be got in decent shape. My 240's have manual windows one with cold AC. But the truth is , the old stuff is passing away. Try selling one of these cars, most likely your in for disappointment. Max

How do you know there is no smoke?  I had same thing except 300SD.  Was in third gear at 30 mph and an absolute egg beater at 70 mph.  Finally put larger wheels and tires on it and it was a lot better.  But the whole thing was full of problems at 200K.  It had problems with everything and I didn't see any smoke, but those following me did.

The main thing it was good for was it's ability to arrive at whatever resisted it with serious mass.  Oh, and did I mention the leaking tail lights?  One day I went to the MB Church to get a part.  Shocked at the price, I was impressed to check on line for a substitute.  Found it at Grainger for 1/20 th price and made of better materials!  It is understandable to keep the Church up (that's what the dealership looked like-a church) you are paying many times what the part is worth.

I sold the MB to a friend who wanted it and he finally got in an accident and another member of the Pick and Pull Church was installed amidst the gowing numbers of these tanks sitting on 8 rims welded together testifying to the great wealth sunk into these barges.

Actually my '85 Peugeot TD 5 speed could outperform the MB in every way with it's faults.  Hated to part with it, but did so since an '85 CX TRD 5 speed showed up and I can't have two.

All MB diesel owners should consider going to a Prius as the logical extension of what they are doing is less fuel consumption and less MB problems like power widows, tachs that don't work, AC problems, seats falling apart, tail lights leaking, engines overheating, fan problems, glow plug problems, injection pump problems, injector problems, door lock problems, speedometer problems, cruise control problems, fuel leakage problems, transmission problems, vibration problems, and rear end problems.  And there are plenty of problems I forgot about.

Fuel economy was reasonable unless you went over 65 mph.  Then that lead sled needed an overdrive.  And that wasn't available.
