There must be an air leak somewhere to allow the system to drain. If you find that, you don't need a check valve.
Air needs a small leak to get by. I've had luck spraying an oil on different spots. The oil will clog the small crack and seal it. Or maybe a pressure check with soapy water?

Do you see any fuel leaking?

I checked the glow plugs in two ways.  For heat with an infrared thermometer & by voltage drop.  It's the fuel probably unless the compression is bad.  But to crank for a minute and then start and idle smoothly?  Gotta be fuel.  The valve clearance was checked and it just got a diesel purge.  How hard is a check valve.  I sure they make them for 3/8 inch hose.  Lawrence Rhodes.....
