Re: [diesel_mercedes] exhaust doughnuts -

Every 6 months I order (from AutohausAZ) various nuts, bolts, washers, donuts, fluids to get the order up to $50 for some "free" shipping charges. I have 20 rubber donuts in my trunk, but am now adding a beefed up square one every now and then. I did drop a muffler once in Palm Springs when I went over a speed bump at night, but coat hangers saved the day. I think it was 6 months later when I put new rubber donuts back on.  PS - bought some graphite the other day for door locks and ignition - anyone ever smash up pencil lead to make their own graphite?

I'm not sure that's what they're called but I noticed yesterday that just about every single one on my car is cracked & not far from failure.  I seem to remember some info not long ago regarding which ones to buy.  My apologies for not saving the email but I thought I'd turn to the group to eliminate having to buy them every few years which I think is what would happen if I go with the cheapies.

Thanks & Happy Holidays,

Bill,

Good find.

Listing 320917646085 on eBay has the vehicles it fits, including mine and probably yours.

If you go to the home page , it's listed in there somewhere , the part # begins with 107.....

Replace all of them with this one now and never need to again .

[diesel_mercedes] A Grand Day Out

Well ;

It appears I'm rushing things , first Tom's rockerbox gasket then I opened up my air cleaner this morning to find the reason it rattles so loudly is : I left a 3" 3/8" extension in there ! .

Apparently I also ran short of rubber buffers the last time I replaced them as two were noticeably newer than the one that broke so I only replaced the one broken one , all the while maveling at how clean and dry my engine appears ~ all those niggly little O-Rings , gaskets and so on , have finally paid off ! .

It's *so* clean and dry , I see some minor rust forming , a rare thing in my limited Diesel experience .

As Tom was working and my Son went off to visit his InLaws , I spooled up the old bus and headed up the world famous Ca. Rt. 2 , The Angeles Crest Highway where it's foggy and misting , temps slightly above freezing so no snow nor ice .

I kept the window open for the fresh air and the heater on full , the temp. gauge kept varying between 79* C and 60* C , at the same time the dash vet's thermometer varied from 122* F to 144.9* F .

I didn't dare go over 45 MPH as who knows when ice or snow might be around the next corner , the Subaru Legacy fell in behind me and occasionally caught up enough for me to see his headlights .

Stopping at Newcombs Ranch I had an entirely underwhelming omlet and some nasty , bitter coffee , fiddled with the dead illuminated wreath a bit before giving up on it , my heart just isn't into it so I'll hang it unlit , what the hey .

Having a surfeit of power is nice most of the time , knowing when to ease off the loud pedal is better .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Machine Works

What Tony said ! .

I have never tried my hand at being a machinist , nor have I yet to meet an Machinist . no matter how competent , who's a good Mechanic .

Odd but true .

Seeing a crankshaft whirling off centered on the lath , is amazing as it appears ready to fly off and kill someone at any moment .

Then , there's knowing how to properly radius the corners in the bearing journals , failure to do this the specific way necessary on older Air Cooled Porsche cranks (a , B & C) , has caused many to develop cracks and fail rapidly .

All in all I know so very little but I'm always enjoying learning new things .

I'm about to head home and begin tinkering on my Coupe , folks keep coming up and telling me I left the lights on it my old truck , not realizing my seasonal illuminated Christmas Wreath , stays on until the sun gets too bright .

RE: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Re : Small Diesel

Compressed air is a good place to start, to be sure you’ve got some of the mechanics worked out. Next is lubrication, if he decides to add some sort expanding medium to push the pistons down. This implies added heat, and expansion of the parts.

I have this type of hot air motor: http://tinyurl.com/cb79n23

I have to squirt a bit of light oil up into the piston area or it will slow and stop from friction. Bill in Oregon

Turning the journals is not that hard, the crankshaft is being cut out of a solid piece, so you make a fixture, or use a four jaw chuck, to hold the piece with the journal centered, at the chuck, and either a similar fixture or just a spot for a live center at the tailstock. The workpiece spins way off center except for the journal being turned.
PS knowing how it is done, and being able to do it are not the same.

This is not CNC technology; this guy made everything at home on his lathe and drill press. Took 1220 hours (a year and a half?) to make the 261 pieces. Note the end-loaded crankshaft into the block (like an Offy), 12 individual cylinder heads, TINY rods and pistons, dual "under head" cams with pushrods to rockers in the heads. And, he did break-in using an electric drill driving the crankshaft! Even if you're not an engineer, you'll love this! http://www.wimp.com/tiniestengine/
