Re: [diesel_mercedes] The Appreciation of 123's

People, as a species,  mostly do not appreciate what they have.

I am tarting up the basics  ---and then even to putting in LED visor, signal, & dome lights; strip lights {hidden} under hoods and inside trunks, etc.---
  on my (all 4 door)   '83 300SD,
  renovating an '84 300D,
and righting a wrong that caved-in the front driver's side  (about 18"x18", btw bumper and tire) on an '83 300D station wagon.
All seriously bullet-proof solid vehicles, they stay smack-steady on the road and are all roomily and comfortably reminiscent of my dad's '49 Plymouth & his Ford.
I don't give a rats-rear about    $$$ appreciation any more than I would put any kind of $$$ on any relationship I have.

(I have to confess to lusting for an early '50s limousine)

for that matter, If anyone does not think their 123's are worth keeping ...    call me.

Nate,

I know that you contend that the 123's will never go up much in value but I am beginning to wonder about that. It is twice a week, at least that someone comes up to me wanting to buy my coupe.

Several years ago I can remember thinking that these were the ugliest car that Mercedes ever made, but now that look is starting to grow on me. Maybe that is because I have come to realize the intrinsic value of reliability, endurance and low operational cost?

I count myself pretty good at spotting those cars that are moving up the appreciation latter. I have a string of those that I have sold just before they made their move. I also sold my Apple stock now too many years back for $37 bucks.

So my report of coming escalation of price with 123's comes from a deep place of knowledge and experience. I've just got the hunch that these babes are going to take off soon.

Just every now and then I'll spot my car in the parking lot as I am coming out of a store and I catch myself thinking, "That's a good looking car."

It's kind of like that girl that you have been with for awhile and you catch her coming across the room and you think to yourself, "I'll keep her for awhile longer."

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: People of the Soil

Max,

Max,
Remember, I didn't buy these panels, so we didn't directly get rebates,
yet the rebates the company got for installing them on my roof, gave me
a better flat rate for the power the panels provide. At the end of the
contract, I can renew a contract or buy the panels at a set amount.

Brian,
Yes, we seem to have a group of folks who like to do stuff, working on
these neat old cars, along with many other pursuits.

"E" can reflect the body line.  MBZ makes "A", "B", "C" lines (probably also "D" but I've not seen them), as well as "E" and "S" lines of cars, starting from compact ("A") up to full size ("S").  The "E" line is what used to be called the 123 body style, and is a 'midsize' car line.

The US never got "A" or "B" car lines, and only started getting the "C" cars (which are sold here as 'compacts') I think in the 1990s as MBZ decided to debase its 'ultra-luxury' image to gain broader sales.

Any "E" body line can have any MBZ engine, gas or diesel.  The "E" refers to the body size, not the drive train.

My experience in Paris and Berlin is that the "E" body 4-door sedan style is one of the most popular vehicles for taxicab use.

ON THE OTHER HAND, when the "E" appears after the numbers (280E) this indicates a carburetted gasoline engine, and distinguishes from the "i" designation (280i) which indicates a gasoline, fuel injected engine.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: John got his Mercedes stolen

I heard about this months ago.  He had ducked into the Jag dealer and when he came out his car was gone.  It IS a nice car.  Was it ever recovered?  Not sure about the insurance thing.  My insurance will only give me liability and un-insured/under insured.  If is stolen I'm outa luck.

I thought the "E" in 280E was for Einspritzung (fuel injection).  Isn't the "i" BMW speak for fuel injection, e.g. 328i?

There isn't such a switch on my '81. I usually start it in neutral with my
foot
off the clutch.

Is there supposed to be a neutral safety switch equivalent on a manual
transmission car such that the starter will only run with the clutch
depressed?
The Haynes book seems to think so and I haven't cracked the Mercedes book,
but I
don't think mine has.
