Re: [diesel_mercedes] early 1980s 300TD wagon -- turbo?

Alan,

Most of the 300TD's you'll find are mainly turbo from '80-'87.

Here's a list of MB models:

[diesel_mercedes] Re : 300TD wagon -- turbo?

WELCOME Alan ! .

All American version 300TD's 1981 > have turbos , some will be ' grey market ' versions and not have the turbo , go now and begin looking at all the old Mercedes' you can and ask the seller , to show you ~ the turbo is a big alloy snail looking thing under the air cleaner on the right side of the engine . once they point it out to you , you'll know .

Whatever you do , _DO_NOT_ buy a Mercedes ANYTHING with 5 _vertical_ HVAC buttons unless you like misery and pain plus freezing cold in winter and stifling heat in summer.... this isn't a joke , it's a heartfelt WARNING .

Also , look closely under the rear side windows , rocker panels and battery tray for any rust holes ~ by the time you see bubbles or pin holes , it's *VERY* serious .

Just yesterday I saw a nice old 1982 300TE in a remote junkyard , this is a W-123 Wagon with the peppy if gas hogging M-110 6inline 6 cylinder engine ~ no rust but they don't sell them =8-( too bad as it would have made a DYNOMITE ' builder ' ~ just buy a rusted out or wrecked 300SD and transplant the engine over... (easier said than done) .

In closing : BEWARE the ' cheap ' Mercedes ! it will always be the MO$T EXPEN$IVE CAR YOU EVER OWN ! . (but , you'll polly love it anyway , I do)

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Color Sanding Old 2 Stage Paint

You're pretty much screwed Chip ;

If you can remove the flaking clear coat without damaging the underlying ' Petrol Blue ' paint , then you can have the car re sprayed with clear coat , this actually works out really well but only used car paint shops will ever do it because there's always blemishes remaining and body shops just don't believe we'd be happy as long as it's sealed up again and glossy , no matter the stone chips and scratches .

Good luck , DO NOT try waxing / polishing the paint below the clear coat ! .

Yesterday Jr. and I saw a super clean looking Petrol Blue 300CD Sports Coupe on it's way to some junkyard.... it was shiny and glossy like new but was missing a wheel and the tow truck hauling it , was from some scrapyard ~ I nearly cried .

[diesel_mercedes] Re : BILSTEIN Shock Absorbers

FWIW ;

You should buy the ' HD ' Bilsteins and thanx to the PDF format Bilstein Catalog in the files section , you can find Bilsteins for most any car you own , believe me when I tell you : the slightly higher initial co$t is more than offset by their longevity and safer , better handling and ride comfort , plus your tires , ball joints and so on , will all last longer too ~ I recently installed a set of these HD shocks to my 1969 Chevrolet C/10 short bed pickup truck ~ one of those (in)famous coil springs on all four corner ones , well known when new as " Motorized Pogo Sticks " .

To - day I finally had the opportunity to drive over the San Gabriel Mountain range , at a fairly fast clip and I was well pleased in the improvement in road holding ability due 100 % to these fine shocks .

Bite the bullet and buy a set , you'll love 'em .

How long do we have to utilize this discount ? I need to work a full set for my Diesel Sports Coupe into my tiny budget...

[diesel_mercedes] Re : P.S.V Belt Adjustment

Actually , there's two or three bolts on the P.S. pump that must be loosened before you twist the adjuster screw or it'll strip like Tom's was.........(God bless Pick-A-Part , home to $35 Vickers P.S. Pumps with NO leaks and FREE adjusters !)

[diesel_mercedes] Re : Orphan Black Vacuum Line Hanging Under My Dash

No worries Chip ;

There's a _reason_ I have silver hair.... =8-) .

I have scoured the junkyards , used car lots , ' charity ' auctions , thrift stores & used book shops far and wide to bring you my collected ' knowledge ' ~ use it *very* carefully and never expect a fast answer .

There may be two black plastic tubes under the hood , only _one_ under the dashboard and that one is _always_ open because it's a vent so , if it's now connected to the vacuum spider and is sucking air in under the dashboard , I'd unplug it from the rubber underhood spider and plug that vacuum leak for now ~ DO NOT damage nor remove the now apparently useless black vent pipe ! .

-Nate

[diesel_mercedes] Vacuum Diagram - Basic OM617

O.K. Trish ;

I found this one :

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/diesel_mercedes/photos/album/1748912884/pic/2135431032/view?picmode=&mode=tn&order=ordinal&start=1&count=20&dir=asc

I'll keep looking as I know they're in there somewheres...

I know there's a W-123 Factory Shop Manual in there too , it'll have the diagrams but you'll spend forever (or so it seems) finding the page they're on ~ this is why I prefer _books_ ~ they're easier to use for me .

Of course , once you buy the CD - ROM FSM you can easily print out the diagrams and anything else you're pondering & drag it out to the car , scribble notes on it , swear it it , crumple up and throw away in disgust or roll your tobacco in it as soon as you're finished and you'll still have the CD - ROM for the next go....

I'd_NEVER_ take my precious FSM's anywhewre near the actual car , that's how they get ruined .

Oops ~ I'm ranting again , sorry 'bout that Trish .

-Nate
Trish here, I'm looking and looking and can't find the above mentioned pics. Do
you know what file they're hiding in?

Took yesterday off from working on the car. Both of us are worn out over this.
It's not bad enough that we're complete MB virgins, but we have to drive 45
miles one way to get to the car to work on it.

Had no clue we were going to need anything off of the other trans. We do have
the old motor.

We really appreciate all of the information from everyone. Kevin has to go back
to work tomorrow, so our adventures will be slowed down. Since it's a short week
he'll take the truck to work, leaving me on the farm.
