Re: [diesel_mercedes] Parts Replacing Cautions

As an added note, if you get the exchange part from MB, make sure the core you send back is a factory original part or you won't get a refund. This is common with water pumps.

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] Parts Replacing Cautions

When you go to work on your car (any vehicle) , often it is far cheaper to buy rebuilt or used ' exchange ' parts .

A big caution must be made here , any honest seller will allow you to pay a " core charge " for the value of the old worn out part so you'll keep it until the job is finished , then you return the old part and they refund your core charge .

Failure to do this has several down sides :

If the new/rebuilt/used part is defective , you return it and get your money back but , your core (old part) is _GONE_ ~ no matter what the seller tells you in advance , this is how it goes . you're now seriously stuck .

If you neglected to take some small bracket , special fastener or other fitment part off your old part before trading it in , it too is _GONE_ forever .

Parts sellers who will not relinquish the new part until you hand over your old one , are inherently DISHONEST as they don't care if you are able to complete the job or not .

In conclusion , never , _EVER_ hand over your old parts / cores until the job at hand is 100 % finished and tested over some days to ensure it's actually done and working to your acceptance .

-Nate

[diesel_mercedes] Happy New Year!

Want to wish all my MB Diesel pals the very best for 2012. My 4th year on this thread and feel a great kinship with you all. Thanks for all your help, encouragement and input.

Oh, and if anyone happens to be by a PAP and sees a W116 body, non SEL (regular rear door, not the long one), I'm in need of some *black* interior trim pieces. Rear door panels (both sides), B Pillar trim and the trim piece that runs from front to back where the door assist handles are on the roofline.

Thanks a bunch and all the best for 2012!

Ben near Detroit.

Yes, but that is for a fully charged battery at rest. Voltage will drop a lot in use. Max

[diesel_mercedes] Emboldened Stupidity

I will often allow stupid questions to clutter my mind about my car. I have a collection of them, but today only have the courage to ask about two stupid questions.

These are both vacuum related and probably easy for you guys but they are not easy for me.

First up, vacuum line hose and how tight a connection needs to be. It seems that my local auto parts has two sizes for me to consider, the one that slips off of the rigid plastic piping all to easy and the second, that requires a soaking in scalding hot water before fitting, or the use of a small phillips head screw driver to stretch and wallow it out before using all of my strength to drive it on.

I am sure someone is going to tell me that Mercedes has a special size vacuum line, completely unlike anything you can buy in a standard auto house. If that is the case, tell me so and I'll get the right stuff. I dare not miss any more vacuum leaks of any sort.

My second vacuum related stupid question is about the vacuum check valves. I have blown through all of mine, and deduced which direction they need to be positioned so that vacuum can flow from the vacuum pump to the various vacuum controlled mechanics of the car.

But, do all of the vacuum check valves flow in the direction of the vacuum pump, or are some of them positioned so as not to allow the pump to draw pressure.

I'll sleep better with these questions having been ask. I have lots of other stupid questions but my ego will only allow for so many of these at one time.

[diesel_mercedes] Orphan Black Vacuum Line Hanging Under My Dash

Without hesitation I follow Nate's advise, to the letter. He last advised that I check the two short rubber tubes that connect the two brown vacuum lines to the key switch. With some struggle, I pulled to access panel to get under the dash and check this connection. I found the rubber connector tubes to be in good shape and the brown shut down lines connected as they should be.

But...in the process, I would a black vacuum line, all most in the exact location of the brown lines, under my cover panel of the steering column, disconnected.

I have hunted pretty good under the dash to see when this might have gone, the other end is connected to a three way spider, with a line that feeds the top back of the injector pump and another line that runs to the top of the valve cover and mounts into a black box with other vacuum lines also attached.

What is the black orphan and what might it need connecting to.

Nate advised earlier that the black line is some models connected to another vacuum storage container within the driver's side fender, but it appears that this line is running in the wrong direction to make that connection.

Mine is a 1982 300CD Turbo coupe.
