Re: [diesel_mercedes] turn signals don't cancel?? w126

This is totally easy.  A module that swaps out with two plugs.

I broke the turn signal in the 1980 Caddy hearse.  The ONLY possible repair was to replace the entire column!!!

When my 126 turn signal stopped canceling, Nate and I went to P-a-P and got another one.  We anticipated horrors, having already done it on the Caddy.

But, like so much else on the Benz, sensible engineering told a different tale.

Take off the steering wheel.  Then the column jacket comes off, with the turn signal/ cruise control switch module (3 screws, if I recall).  The module has two cables that go down through the column jacket and terminate in plugs under the dash.

As with everything automotive, contorting yourself to do anything under the dash is the hardest part.  But with the plugs unplugged, the module and column Jacket will just lift off the end of the column.

Installing the 'new' one is as simple as taking the old one out.  IT IS MORE SIMPLE if you pay attention while taking one out at the P-a-P yard.  You need to be careful about putting the steering column back on, so that the splines line up, leaving the wheel in the right position when the tires are pointing straight ahead.  That took us two tries.

When it was off, Nate pointed out that the mechanism looks essentially like the old VW turn signal cancel mechanism.  I guess the Benz engineers understand the concept that it isn't necessary to re-engineer something that works.

Now I realize the turn signals won't cancel.

A little reading-- apparently this part is the "cancel cam"

Anyone swapped one out?? Looks to be just under the steering wheel, correct??
