I took SWMBO's wagon to work and then home the other day as the new (used , lovingly rebuilt) horns didn't work and the grille's plastic insert was beginning to look pretty rough from the sun .
The horns were a blown fuse , maybe I blew it whilst testing the BIG 1958 High Tone horns I rebuilt and installed , not sure but we'll soon know .
The grill , new ones are available from " URO " but the stamped steel surround SUX big time , it's cheesy , thin and poorly made so I get a good original German surround , dis assemble it carefully setting all the various clips , bumpers and screws aside (because the URO parts SUCK) , then I hand polish the chrome as it's *very* good quality and always shines up like new .
Then I swap the clips onto the new plastic insert and re assemble it to the now shiny German surround , adjust the aluminum strips for proper fitment and re - install using again, the correct original German ATF screws .
I top it off with a N.O.S. German OEM Mercedes badge and hood star ~ WOW ! the whole front of the car looks nice now .
I replaced the plastic headlight surrounds last year when I got a pair affordably .
SWMBO is pleased as am I .
As I now have a collection of used W-123 grilles & parts , I'm going to try and assemble at least one decent one out of the best parts , we'll see how that goes .
