Follow Tom's clue. There are many posts several years back. Do a search on LED or some such thing. Some people were happy with the results. There are also threads involving putting some aluminum foil in strategic places to guide the light.

I have a dim cluster and would love to brighten it, possibly in blue or amber?

Rummage through the archives. I believe that there was a line on this.

Think it through - LEDs are essentially low voltage, DC devices. So a simple dropping resistor in series, should make an LED work in the existing set up, if you want to do a home brew.

If I recall correctly, at least a couple of the LED companies are now producing LEDs in different color and directionality specifications in the bulb packaging that the cluster illumination uses.
