Oh well thanks guys,
kinda odd, thanking Y'all for giving me the answer I did not want.
Dang;
The radio is an aftermarket job and was installed poorly, with silicon to hold the wood in place, I guess because the installer did not know how to get the radio in and out.

[diesel_mercedes] Trip mpg, no AC, fast, windows down
My wife and I just got back from an 800 mile trip to Groveland, CA (near
Yosemite). We tried to get up early enough to avoid the heat in the
valley, as the AC is broken, it started getting pretty hot out there. As
always, the mountain roads were fun.
807.5 miles @ 24.8 mpg, pretty good while traveling fast with all the
windows down.
A little over 6 hours each way.

[diesel_mercedes] Metropolitan Spotting!
I just wanted to let everyone know that I spotted a fleet, sporty little bucket in a Red Box movie "A Prayer for Bobby". You just could not miss little Bobby driving down a dark ally in his little Nash Metropolitan. I think it was that lovely turquoise and white two tone color. The one that goes great with pink sweaters!
I'll not give away to plot of the movie but will tell you that the Metropolitan spotting was the high point for me and you get to see it in the first 15 minutes.

Who you can see is badly missing his 300cd turbo coupe in Houston.
[diesel_mercedes] Re: stuck antenna
Sounds to me like a stuck radio is stopping the antenna from working.

Re: [diesel_mercedes] stuck antenna
Tony, It is unlikely the antenna being stuck will make the radio stop
working. It may reduce the signal strength - so weak stations don`t
come in. Exception - if the cable has become disconnected. Bobby
