Use one of the many R12 freon replacement refrigerants. Google R12
replacement. There are many to choose from. You won't need to replace
the R12 seals. At a minimum you will need about three cans of charge.
A conversion fitting that will go on the low pressure fitting on you car
and a can tap with a pressure meter. A can of "oil charge" might not be
a a bad idea either. I've used this stuff for years with great results.

[diesel_mercedes] The 300TD parts car.
Today went to look at the 300TD that was offered to me last week. There is a story here.
The owner has lived pretty far back in the weeds for 30 years, is a bright and articulate man. He has befriended the black bears in the area and was feeding them, as many as 30 bears at a time, they know him and respond to him.
The car;- pale blue 85 with around 500,000 Kilometers. It is a mess, a bear got locked in it which kinda made a mess of the interior & another bear climbed on the hood and sun roof, dented them quite well. We could not get the hood open & I broke off the grill pull bit. (tips on how to open the hood short of a can opener?) Is an automatic has bundt wheels, tires do not even look too bad. Forgot to check the tail lights was busy watching out for bears, sorry :-{ swmbo thinks they are ok though. No back bumper, windshield cracked glass ok. So it wont be a car again, dunno if I should get it and part it out?? Prolly cost about $100/$200 to get it home on a truck. There are clouds of mozzies where the car is & that makes it just about impossible for me to work on where it is.
The owner made headlines last fall for feeding bears and growing a patch. His driveway has ponds in it that are as much as 2' deep and is very rough, I would not take our Mercedes in, but he says he will tow the TD out with his tractor. The experience was very interesting, he has a pet three legged bear which has two cubs. We kinda happily did not get introduced to them.

Need your help. We have a 1984 mercedes 300D. A/C blows hot. Does anyone sell a kit to convert to the 134 freon? Is there anything I should know before getting into this.
It has been 85-102 up here in N. Cal. We are melting.
thanks, Nick
[diesel_mercedes] "MY" New Addition
I have added my second Mercedes to my stable, a 1983 300D 326k miles.
Astral Silver with Blue interior.
The first owner had it for 150k miles sold the the guy I bought it from
in 2000. I liked the idea that 2 people had it for a long time and allot
of miles, and that it had regular use and regular service rather than
sitting around. Oddly enough, from the records, it seems the odometer
has always worked too!
I also like the idea that the last owner had the engine replaced 66k
miles ago, and hasn't used anything but commercial b95 in it. No home
brews, greases, wastes, or other concoctions. The transmission 56k miles
ago with records of having its fluid and filter changed since. I liked
the idea the front end components were done 30k ago.
I typed all the records he gave me since 2000, into a spreadsheet gulp.
About $24k spent over the years, not including some lost or missing
receipts for things like tires, battery, CCU.
Of course nothing is perfect, the antenna got broken off, the A/C
doesn't work (but I hear the compressor engage), needs a cruise and tach
amp, and only one side of the hazards flash. Oh and the tear in the
drivers seat. It does leave a nickle size oil spot at the far front
overnight. The trunk lid paint is faded, and there is a dent at the
front of the drivers fender.
I attached the spreed sheet I made for those that might be nerdly
interested in such info.
Here are a couple pics and videos of it. It hasn't been cleaned up at
all, as I emailed a couple hours after he listed it. He was surprised it
had so much interest, I scrambled to get him his full $1150 asking price
as fast as I could.

I have been looking for a W123 for a long time. Alas I am to big and fat
to be comfortable in it, but then I still have the SDL for that.

I tried to get a look at that a few weeks ago when it was $900, but I
got snubbed by the owner with a "This is not the car for you". I sent
him a canned message I send to all cars I am interested in, no matter
the condition or age. I simply asked about the cars condition and for
some larger pictures since CL makes them so small.
I am certainty glad he put me off, because I wouldn't have had the money
to buy the car I did get 9see my other post). From what I can see it
seems worth $500 to me, I wasn't going to drive out and see it @ $900
when he showed so much interest in selling it to me. I know you have
been mercless for awhile...

[diesel_mercedes] Getting Ready To Sell
To - day I hitched up my trousers & began cleaning out my old 1980 300CD
It is amazing how much stuff one can carry in a car that doesn't even look 1/4 full .
I found so many new parts I'd purchased , I had to set up a separate bag
for them all , some are Coupe specific parts so this bag will go into my '84 300CD .
Vintage Becker radios , oil & fuel filters in the box , light bulbs , quarts of oil , ATF , 1/2 gallon of Startron , on and on and....
I found photos I'd been looking for for 4 years , receipts for much of the works done on this car , I hope the next owner likes & appreciates it but I doubt that as he's buying it for his Daughter....
I even began cleaning the leaves & debris out from under the hood before my wonderful son showed up un announced and drove my old VW Panel Truck away , after loading it with Vintage Porsche engines & parts - I can actually see my back yard again and I'm stoked .
