The difference in the CR *may* in the cylinder head , I don't know .
You best & easiest bet is to find a beat up or rusted out / wrecked 300SD from 1979 or so and yank the engine out of it ~ if you do a valve adjust then compression test first ,you'll be able to pick a good used engine up cheaply as they're scattered all across America .
SD's all have the turbo charger and the engine built for it .

It's not sponsored by M-B N.A. and it is not the Mercedes Museum at The Classic Center ~ that's just where the initial meet up is .

The classics offered for sale there are beautiful; the cabriolets are unreal. --- On Wed, 4/13/11, tom hanson <halfviking@yahoo.com> wrote:

In the 123s, that is. The S-class models, 300SD, W116 and it's successor, the W126, were turbo'd from the start (1978).

It's only on the turbo'd engines. they didn't start putting turbo's on them till 80 or 81.

That's because the non turbo engines don't have them.....
The good news is : once you've tuned it to the Nth degree , you can flat foot it all day long and it'll go like stink and get decent fuel economy too .
Just remember : Diesels _DO_ need regular tune ups and maintenance or they'll become unreliable money pits .

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Museum Tour and Pizza luncheon
Yes ;
The Mercedes Classic Center in Irvine, Ca.
They said to be there by 08:00 , I'll try to be there by 07:00 for the usual meet & greet jazz , what's the freeway & off ramp again ? .
Once I'm there I should be able to find my way alright .
BTW : this is a NO HOST lunch ! means : pay your own way .
