Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: Swapping for a turbo...who's done this?

An '80 SD will have the same transmission you have.  So, the whole shebang should go right in.  The only concerns would be:  Radiator hoses and inlet/outlet positions; exhaust pipe at the turbo; throttle linkages; A/C compressor pipes, if that matters to you.  My '77 300D had the York compressor, my '79 300SD has the GM Frigidaire compressor, two very different compressors mounted at opposite sides of the front of the engine.

You may want to check the SD transmission, see if it looks like it's been leaking around the shaft for the manual (shifter) control lever, and/or the kick down lever.  If so, then the seals are getting dry, which could mean problems with reverse in the future.  'Could be next week, could be next decade, who knows....  But, now would be a good time to replace those shaft seals, and the reverse piston seal, if there's any indication of trouble.

Would love to come down for a weekend engine swap, but, the deadbeat tenant in one of my houses here is moving out, so, we've got to get it fixed up and re-rented.  Plus, the holidays are coming up so I can't get out of my job at McZone, I'm in the middle of a 190SL project, my wife won't let me... oy, I've got a million excuses....

Geez I can't believe that with all that talk, not one person has come up with solid experience in swapping out for a turbo...or at least no one will admit it.

My car '81 300D. Donor car 80' 300 SD. I have the motor and trans. I know the exhaust needs an extension.

Fun? Hahaha....come on down to TX! We could use the help! There's more than enough private, free places to stay. The car is sitting in the shop of the 500 acre church camp where Kevin works. There are 40 buildings of cabins, bunk houses, and others. Plus about 40 hotel rooms. A full kitchen, with service when there are people in camp. When they don't serve, we go in and make our own food. We'll be working on the swap while camp is shut down for the holidays.
