Well, to be fair, the W110 was a pretty light car. No power windows or sunroof, no A/C (usually), even power steering was an option. Also no vacuum door locks or fuel shut-off, ventilation system, etc. They were gloriously basic....
That early MB automatic was especially efficient. It used a fluid coupling that was largely out of the picture in the higher gears. It's very much like the original GM Hydra-Matic from the '40's - '50's, though MUCH smaller and lighter (at least the MB unit was made of alloy). The manny tranny is probably four-on-the-tree.
2 litre diesel was about 50 hp at sea level. In Denver, you're left with about 45 hp. Maybe 38 - 40 hp at the tunnels. But, imagine dropping in an OM617A (3 litre turbo). Now, THAT'S what I'M talkin' 'bout!
If he was asking about $1500 less, I'd be out there with 5-gallons of fresh diesel, a charged up battery, floor jack, filled up air tank, my hand tools and a tow dolly behind the '84 K1500.
