Problem solved. The very loud (think hammer on muffler) noise described as "whang, bang, & clang" which struck fear into the heart of my passengers - and was not discoverable through any exterior inspection turns out to have been a dry rear CV joint which was noiseless on flat ground for 1000's of miles, but which had worn (gouged?) metal out of the joint, so that on a long protracted run on a 6% grade, the joint apparently separated just enough to make you think you were in a boiler room.
There are 3 such grades going into Las Vegas. My new axle & CV joints were as quiet as a thief at midnight. Problem solved.
PS - Mary's optimum cruising speed is 81mph.
