I've heard this too , but I always change the fluid & filter and if it fails , it was going to strand you anyways .
There's a back flush machine (I *think* it's called a ' BG ') that's supposedly very good , I'd just as soon drop the pan and make 1000 % sure there's no silt in it or band debris , the filter is new and so on .
Most Slush Boxes use only an intake screen , Mercedes has a real filter so when it's dirty , you're beating the crap out of your tranny .
