Re: [diesel_mercedes] Newbie question # 2

The differences between the OM617 (normally aspirated) and the OM617A (turbocharged) engines include jet nozzles in the block to spray the pistons with oil (for cooling) and pistons with different expansion characteristics.  Installing a turbo on a non-turboed engine is asking for big trouble.

Make sure the car is in good tune.  How're the valve lash adjustments?  Fuel filters in good condition?  Don't forget about the strainer in the fuel tank.  Or the air filter.  A Diesel Purge treatment will insure the injection pump and injectors are clean and running at top efficiency for best power and mileage.  Make sure the "throttle" linkage is correctly adjusted to allow full operation of the injection pump.  May also want to check the amount of timing chain stretch.

I had a '77 300D, non-turbo.  Here at a mile above sea level, it was down to 68 horsepower (they're 80 hp at sea level), and performed adequately.  It was no barn-burner, but it generally wasn't the slowest from the stop lights, either.  I-70 up the hill, where Vail Pass approaches 11,000 feet above sea level and the car was further down on power, I could just hold 55-60 mph.  Pulling off the interstate for whatever reason meant a loooooong time to get back up to speed, so this was avoided at (nearly) all costs.

After all that, perhaps the best advice is to learn to enjoy life at a slower pace....

Subject: [diesel_mercedes] Newbie question # 2

Hello All

I just bought a 1978 300D. It is in very good shape for a car that old.
I am planning on it being my daily driver.

Can I add a turbo from a later diesel? The lack of speed on hills in my biggest problem with the car.

thank you
Rodger
