[diesel_mercedes] Sylvia - '84 300 SD - update + auto shift knob question + tow hitch suggestions?

After the last starter rebuild (3rd in 16 mos) Sylvia is starting reliably and finally getting some decent mileage (25 MPG)....not sure what was keeping it down but things seem to have rebounded as the temps got warmer. AC worked first time after a winter of not using it, so far all is well.

Does anyone know how the AT shift knob attaches? Is it removable? I'd like to remove my shift knob and put another one on - any suggestions?

In other news,

(apologies in advance for leaving the MB brand, if not German diesels altogether...)

we traded our convertible VW bug and acquired a 2011 Jetta TDI. The 42 MPG as advertised is real and the sticker said 36. Some folks report 50+ MPG w/ tail wind, 1 pax, etc...I've been using StarTron from fill up #1 and mile 101, is there any reason NOT to do this given it's a "new diesel"? I see no reason why not, in fact it's probably more important than before. Also adding CEtane boost - same recipe as for the 27 yo hulking 300 SD sitting next to it. Bavaria vs. Wolfsburg :^)

My wife wasn't sure about a diesel Volkswagen after having learned to drive on a VW Rabbit Diesel....I couldn't blame her. After a test drive, we both agreed - the Jetta TDI is an entirely different breed of diesel to be sure. Ultimately what sold us was 6th gear.....it does 70 MPH @ just about 1500 RPM in a strong headwind.

cheers,

-Barton
