It's only on the turbo'd engines. they didn't start putting turbo's on them till 80 or 81.

Boy are you dating yourself ! . that was Chevy's (in)famous " Target Lubrication System " and no , the Mercedes Turbo Diesel engines have nozzles that spray oil up under the piston to improve it's cooling .
