I got my pristine 1982 240D for this reason ~ the PO said it barely went 55 MPH on the freeway and only 15 ~ 20 MPH up hills......
After doing a full tune up and Diesel Purge etc. , I discovered the throttle linkage's rubber isolator was broken and it only got 1/2 throttle no matter how much one mashed the pedal .
So , look at *everything* before taking it all apart or ruining it by adding a turbocharger .
BTW : it won't get 40 MPG no matter what you've read and worse , the *instant* you go faster than 60 MPH , the fuel economy drops off sharply.... down into the low 20's in fact , remember this .
