I have had many 300D, 300SD, and 300SDL cars. I have done no modifications to the cars except a plastic screen preliminary fuel filter (no paper inside). The WVO I filter/use is VERY clean. I run these cars at 25% WVO in the winter, and up to 100% WVO in the summer. This is only for Pre-1999 MB diesels with the mechanical fuel pumps. Electric pumps require the WVO to be heated. I have driven 20K miles on my 1986 300SDL and 70k miles on my 1999 E300 with zero negative effect. Periodically Checking the IP, fuel lines, and glow plugs, there had been no excessive soot or grime buildup at all. They are VERY quiet and run great. These cars are garaged or have have block heaters. They have NOT sat outside for extended periods of time in below freezing weather. Maybe I have gotten lucky. I tried this at the recommendation of Ben at Diesel Performance in Orland Park, Illinois.
