Well,, I have done this twice over the years, work fine for me, first time on the '78 300SD,, took a large hammer wrench from my locomotive days, an the strainer nut,,it came loose just swinging that large wrench in the counterclock wise direction, next time, on the 300D, I bought a cheap socket from O Reillys, about a 46 MM size, an about $20, cheap for that size, no doubt will use it again.
As too the fuel screen, a $3 can of spray carb / injector spray cleaner, did the trick,,, cleaner than a babys butt,, with fresh diaper. Next time, guess I will put a new strainer O ring, as its most likely the original, not expensive either, maybe $4 from Rusty.
I worry that maybe the original screen cleaned real well, is better than a new one that maybe is from China or Mexico, an maybe not the proper size mesh or fit right either. Probably not even real stainless either, maybe el cheapo steel that will rust quickly too. Even Rusty is selling a few of those made in China parts, most likely the only place to bet some parts.
Noticed that Rusty is in North Carolina now, no longer in Atlanta, guess that means higher shipping an slower for us MB knucklebusters in Texas.
Went to the IMPORTEC site yesterday,, they don't have much for my 300D, ordered a few things tho, as they are close to me. ( Dallas Tx)
BTW, gents, some shade tree techs will tell ya that good stainless steel will not rust or corrode,, well those guys have not worked on boats or submarines, around saltwater all the time,, stainless is a misnomer, it will eventually rust an deteriorate, so watch out on these old cars. The chemicals will accelerate the corrosion too.
Ah m,m YES, can someone tell me who has those sets of soft brushes for the heater / AC Blower motors, I understand the hard brushes wear the commutators out quicker ??? I need to order several sets, an rebuild some blower motors for my 2 MBs, plan to put the 300SD back into service someday.
Thanks Doug Traylor Baytown, TX
BTW a guy in Houston just sold a high mile '80 300D coupe for $3700, are MBs getting more expensive on the markets ???
