Re: [Diesel-RVs] Re: unknown vibration when coasting

Gerry,
I have not worked on a motorhome in the area you are needing help, but this I do know,
if the driveline were taken apart, the slide shaft part removed from the solid part, and
reinstalled in the wrong spline, You will have a problem. I did work at Kenworth Motor
Truck Company here in Seattle. I had many jobs, drive lines and the drive line for the
steering shaft to the steering gear box both have U joints that are aligned. If they are
not, I got my butt chewed. I was told it created binding and vibrations if not aligned on
"arrows" on both parts. I will not say you have arrows, but the U joints have to be the
same "to the clock" with each other.

It's not terribly complicated. The yoke on the front of the
driveshaft must be the same plane as the yoke on the rear of the
driveshaft. If the tow truck operator somehow allowed the shaft to
slide all the way out of the splines and didn't get the yokes lined
up when he reinserted the shaft, that could explain it.

Or, some yahoo might have taken a shortcut in reinstalling the
driveshaft and moved the yoke to line up with either the yoke on the
axle or the yoke coming out of the transmission.

[Diesel-RVs] Re: Splendide 2000 Washer/Dryer Model# WD802M

We had the same problem this year with ours - the dial would rotate
and the light blink 13 times. I called the warranty company, and they
said that the pressure sensor for the dryer was causing the problem.
A tech came out, looked around the inside, and said that the wires on
the pressure sensor may not have been crimped properly, so he cut the
wires and installed new terminals. Of course, the problem didn't
display while he was there, either before or after the "fix".
Prior to the tech's arrival, I had checked the hose and found lots of
lint in it, so I turned on the unit and shook the hose to empty it; I
then repositioned the hose to try to eliminate the down loop.
Anyway, it works now, and the problem hasn't repeated itself. If
you've not checked the hose, you might want to see if there's any
blockage.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] unknown vibration when coasting

My first guess would be U-joints. I have a 2002 Ultimate Advantage with 32,000 miles on it. Just came back from Myrtle Beach and started to get a vibration / roar. I did not think U-joints as they had been lubed more frequently than called for. Took to Cummins South --- ended up being a U-joint. The grease distribution channels had a defect in the making of the U-joint. Even though they were greasing them as called for, the grease was not getting where it should be going. Re: [Diesel-RVs] unknown vibration when coasting

Glen,
Check your universal joints. Have you greased them lately? MCC suggests that they be lubed every 5,000 miles. There are 2 fitting on each joint. Make sure that the new grease comes out of all 4 fingers. Chuck B

Has it been towed? Sometime when the driveshaft is removed it isn't put
back together right and is out of phase. I would say ujoints or driveshaft.

Check your U joints or better try greasing them and see if the vibration
stops.

[Diesel-RVs] Re: Moving to Full-Timing

DJ-
When I bought our first DP, I waited for a triple-wide living room
config (2 slides front + bed slide). The 2nd living room slide adds
aisle width, but kills some very valuable storage cabinets up top
along the passenger's side. We also had trouble w/the HWH "chain
slide" mechanism on that side; not HWH's fault so much, although the
chain setup makes more creaks & pops on the road than non-"flush
floor" slide types. The major problem was a manufacturer execution issue.

We traded "down" to a 2-slide coach and are ecstatic we did, tho for
more reasons than the in-coach storage. The Alpine Coach SE comes
w/their patented SmartBed solution for under-coach storage. It is the
best thing to happen to motorhomes since room slides. No more banged
head, strained back, etc.

Good luck on the road, Mike

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Fuel tank success

Max,
The Sedans and Coups use a tank screen with a 46mm hex. Takes a
gigantic socket to change out. The wagons, however, have a
different fuel tank with a different screen. That one takes a 22mm
allen.

I saw the two filters in a parts catalog, but can't remember where,
maybe mercedessource.com or DieselGiant, or someplace like that.

[diesel_mercedes] Fuel tank success

Happy Super Bowl everyone.

I wanted to tell you guys that I finished my in-tank screen cleaning.  It was, of course, completely clogged, but cleaned up nicely.  I still can't figure out how that screen fits in with the fuel pick-up line but it must.

The recessed tank plug was in fact 22mm, which I spun out with a 22mm nut and a breaker bar.  I thought big chunks of slime and funk would flow out of the tank but it didn't.  There was still a couple gallons left in the tank as the car was on a bit of an incline.  I guess the chunks are in there.  I put in 4 gallons of fresh fuel and went for a ride.  The car is still slower than I think it should be(I have not driven another MB diesel to compare) but it runs smoother and drives nicer.  Next chance I get I will fill the tank and put in some of that biocide.  Next up will be an oil change, and a diesel purge and filters.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice, I really appreciate it.

I use the weather channel desktop max which is a subscription service.
However, there is a free version and also weather bug is free.

Re: [Diesel-RVs] Re: Splendide 2000 Washer/Dryer Model# WD802M

Good job, But don't forget the dryer vent on the back. It is
really hard to get to on mine, cause I have so much stuff in the
cabinet above the w/d.. But it is on the left back side. It needs
to be cleaned often too.

South Africa. The are called Bakke, or bakkie, and were made
especially for the SA market. Not sure if made by M-B or converted by
a coachbuilder.

Check the ponton group home webpage.

http://www.mbzponton.org/

You'll have to do a bit of searching there, for the pick-ups, but I
think you'll be ok with that? ;-P

Isn't it obvious to all that the girl was photo-shopped in??

[diesel_mercedes] Re: fuel Primer Pump

You can use channel-lock pliers to remove the old one without taking
off the hose barb. That would work if you were putting on the new
style, since it has a smaller hex and a crowsfoot will fit in the
space to tighten it up.

True about pumping more. The new style is tiny and takes a lot of pumping.

Since I have been changing pre-filters so often, however, I have
developed a regimen that minimizes the required pumping.

Do this when you have 3/4 tank or more fuel. And have a yogurt cup or
similar handy to put the old filter into.
1. Loosen both hose clamps.
2. Remove the feed hose from the old filter.
3. Quickly slip the new filter on the feed hose.
4. Hold the new filter upright and watch it magically fill with fuel
from the bottom up, while you:
5. remove the old filter from the pump line.
6. When it's full of fuel, attach the new filter to the pump line.
7. Twist and arrange as necessary.
8. Tighten the hose clamps.
Ready to go with minimal or no priming, and very little spillage. I
usually drape a rag under the whole works.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: fuel Primer Pump

Brian ;

I got the old ttyp from Performance Products , it works fine .

You'll need to remove the inlet hose and unscrews the barb sticking
up from the IP to get a wrench on the base of the primer pump , then
it becomes a 10 minute job even for old guys like us .

Remember to prop the inlet hose up or it'll cleverly dribble Diesel
fuel all over the floor whilst you're working and SWMBO won't like
it.....

FWIW , the old typ primer pumps work better in that they require
less pumping to do the job , the downside is : you have to remember
to screw it cloesed each time you use it .

knob, or with a new power jobbie? Is the latter really worth the
extra $20? Any of you installed a new model? Either way, I hear

No need for that , simply go to the home page and select "

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Roll start & Thumb

I forgot to mention : if it's a manual tranny , remember to bang the
clutch out in second or third gear , but never _EVER_ use first or
reverse gear to bump start anything ! .

nor ease it out and loose momentum / speed like most noobs do ~ the
idea is to quickly spin the engine up to running speed so it'll
start , not use the clutch slippage to brake the vehcles road speed
and grind 35,000 miles off it's lifespan in a few seconds .

As you were typing nate , I was on my way to see the Dr. , it looks
better (altho' still nasty) so he re-wrapped it and sent me on my
merry way , no work this weekend dammit .

No Moto riding either .

Not hard to change a starter on a 240. Basic tools and a nice place to
work is nice. You can buy a lifetime starter at Schmuck's or other
places for less than $100. Max

Not bad, you'll need a 10 mm hex on a socket and a couple long extensions to
get at the bolts. And remember that a diesel starter is very heavy.
