Re: [diesel_mercedes] Re: fuel filter Replacement : EASY Bleeding

Use any biocide and you don't need a lot. Couple ounces in the filter, couple ounces in an empty tank. Change filters once a month, inspect weekly.

I believe so, but you'll likely need a donor car for the little things.
You'll need:
Throttle linkage, at least the bits that are different. The trans cable
attaches to a bracket on the cam cover.
Vacuum linkage on the IP. Best new, but you'll need to make sure you can
attach to your IP.
That may be all. However, there is a possibility that the trans mount is
different, both rubber and metal, though I'd bet the mounts on the chassis
are the same. Best grab that, too. I think I have the plate, if you need
pics, or the whole thing.

[diesel_mercedes] Re: Fuel Tank Cleaning

Actually , you should us a smaller abrasive as those mentioned won't
scrub the rust/dirt out of corners , pinchwelds and by internal
baffles .

I use BB's to very good effect .

Also , use Phosphoric Aid and water as solvent etc. won't dissolve
rust .

You can also use Molasses mixed 6 to 1 with water , this works well
but takes a _long_ time .

[Diesel-RVs] Re: Tire Pressure - Can't Fill When Cold

I've had the Pressure Pro system on my motorhome and toad ('03 Honda Accord) for nearly three years. In that time it has detected five separate leaks in the Accord. On one occasion, I had checked all of the tires just as we left a CG to go to an RV service center 20 minutes away. By the time we pulled into the service center, the Pressure Pro alarm went off. I figured it had to be a false alarm. Nope! In those 20 minutes we had picked up a nail and the tire had already lost 12 pounds.

I wouldn't be without them (Press Pro Sensors).

[diesel_mercedes] HVAC Cabin Temp. Sensor FoamTube Replacement

O.K. , now I know and you do too :

If there's no sensor in the middle of your dash , it's under the right
hand speaker and you can crumble it and replace with 1/2" clear
tubing , (Dayco P/N CL33) , it'll fit snugly into the rubber end that
remains after the foam crumbles to dust .

This hose should be replaced as it controls how quickly your Klima HVAC
system reats and changes output cold or hot .

BTW : if there's a small rectanglar hole in your right hand dashboard
speaker grille , the sensor has fallen down inside the dash , you can
eaily remove the glovebox liner to acess it and push gently back up
into place intil it locks in with a " click " .

Re: [diesel_mercedes] Unwanted Critters Under The House

Greetings,

I would suggest cougar urine, or perhaps bear urine.

I know, I know.

And it may be for naught, could be that skunks aren't
afraid of anything.

Good luck!

[diesel_mercedes] Re: fuel filter Replacement : EASY Bleeding

You _can_ use Diesel but filling the filter with _any_ Diesel
additive acts as a preventative shot whilst you're doing routine
service ~ once you've cleaned the fungus , dirt & general accumulated
snot out of your Diesel and see/feel how much better it runs , you'll
understand .

Fuel filter replacement is only done once a year or 10,000 miles sp
it should be financially do-able .

[Diesel-RVs] Air brake release noise on 2008 coaches.

The "braying mule in pain" noise on the 2008 American Coaches and
probably other Fleetwoods on Spartan chassis, and maybe some others,
that occurs at every brake application as you release the brake is so
embarassingly loud I have been chasing Spartan about a "fix".
Here is their answer:
"The brake release valve installed is the one specified by the body
maker. Bendix makes one with a rubber baffle (part #28952) that others
have installed and seems to solve the noise problem. Jim."

Those of you with that god-awful noise may want to put it on your
repair list. I'm adding it to my warranty problems.
I am hopeful AC will change that specification very soon. I bet the
workers in the factory get tired of listening to that braying all day
with all the coach movement that goes on.

Greetings,

Great post.

Thanks!

<beeser750@earthlink.net> wrote:

Yeah, they're small, but they're tough li'l lumps.
They were used on every model car MB made in the mid-
to late-'70s, including the 450SE/L, which had a lot
more power in Europe than the ones we got here. The
only exception may be the 450SEL 6.9. And no,
there're no B And M, Transgo or Mr Shift kits
available. You're just not going to get that bark
going into third....

I like the BulkPart transmission kits:

http://www.bulkpart.com/

the parts for yours are listed here:

http://www.bulkpart.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=2&Category_Code=722-1

These kits are unusually complete, and include more
seals and steel rings than you will need. They have
the pan and valve body gaskets, too, which Ma sells
seperately. They come with a piece of paper listing
tightening torques, cleareances and commonly-needed MB
part numbers (like the various sized band anchor
pins). They even include the plastic bits which hold
those pins for the middle and rear bands, which
invariably break as you disassemble the transmission.
After 30-some years and uncountable heat/cold cycles,
they're pretty brittle.

As to which of the kits to get, it's going to depend
on what you find when you take yours apart. Was there
solid matter on the bottom of the pan? Any metal
bits, beyond tiny metalics? As I recall, yours just
died, in the middle of an intersection. That makes me
think something solid and metal broke, and you're
going to need to get parts from a place that breaks
down transmissons and sells used parts. Or get a
parts tranny from the salvage yards..

You'll need to get into the clutch packs to determine
if you need new discs. On my 300,000 mile '79 300SD,
there was no indication at the bottom of the pan of
worn clutches, but a couple of the friction discs in
the forward clutch were down to the metal. There
should be .040" to .060" clearance in each of the
clutch packs. Anything more than that, and you'll
definately need the kit with the friction discs.

Check the bands, too. There are oil grooves that run
inside of them. If the grooves sort of disappear at
the ends of the bands, where they clamp together, they
will need to be replaced. If your fingernail can
easily prick the friction material from the steel
banding, they'll need to be replaced. The center and
rear bands are not adjustable by conventional means;
you must change the little anchoring pins, available
in different lengths. There should be 2 mm to 4 mm
play in the bands..

Think twice about replacing the valve body gasket.
It's usually dry and brittle, and should be replaced.
BUT, there're a BUNCH of small steel and plastic
balls, and some very small valves and springs located
between the three(!!) sections of the valve body.
They LOVE to pop out and roll all over. And getting
them back in is a trick. Don't go in there unless you
have a diagram of some sort to refer to. I used a
copy of the page showing an exploded view of the valve
body found in the multi-make transmission repair
manual at the Denver Public Library. (Sorry I can't
remember the publisher. These manuals are fantastic.
Generally black and gold cover. Not Chilton's,
Clymer's, Haynes,... I'll have to go the shop and
look at one to remember....)

I don't know of any on-line manuals. There used to be
an ATSG paper manual on these, but it's now out of
print. I've never seen one. Nor have I ever seen the
factory manual. Maybe on E-bay? I take a LOT of
photos as I take the transmissions apart, and lay out
everything the way they came out. I use a felt pen to
number or label things, too.

You'll need to get the nut which bolts the flange to
the output shaft. The original one takes a special
socket. I don't have this socket, and end up using a
chisel to get it off, which ruins it. Fortunately,
Rusty's place:

www.buymbparts.com

sells these, and the new ones use a conventional
12-point socket. He also has some of the bronze,
spacer-bushings, which I like to replace, too.

That's all I can think of, for now. Hopefully, I've
answered your questions, and this information is worth
something more than what you paid for it. You'll just
have to start tearing into your transmission, and
write back when something arises.

plugged it like you plug a normal

car tire. The problem was I don't have 35 psi I have 110 psi instead and
eventually the plug was squeezed

out of the tire. Of course all that happened while I was driving 60 mph on
the highway. Since at that time of the blow out only one tire was intact it
would not have been able to carry the 28000 pounds accordingly and the
acceleration of the weight to the left when you do a right turn. That is why
these rigs have duals in the back. So I presume these 28000 pounds could
have rolled over very easily at that speed. Another problem was I didn't
feel a thing, so I had no idea what was going on and therefore I would not
have had a chance to adapt the speed.

This has nothing to do with scare tactics. This was a chain of incidences
which could have lead to a disaster.

It started with an unprofessional repair of a 110 psi heavy truck tire,
which I could have prevented because I should have known better.

I hope this helps to understand. This was an incident which happened to me,
and I just wanted to share it.

Disclaimer: I am not a dealer for pressure monitor systems, nor am I
involved with this business. My only interest is to share experiences with
this group.

Joerg

I noted your statement as below before. Since you've now stated it twice
I'll ask for more "explanation." As I recall, in your earlier message you
stated something only the lines of "one more turn and the rig would have
rolled over." I believe it had to do with a flat on one dual. So, how do
you figure one more turn would have made the rig roll over???

For the record, I understand what pressure monitoring systems do, but like
others, I don't buy into what appears to be "scare tactics" in advocating
them. I've been driving trucks, etc since I was 15 years old, and I've had
blowouts more than once on heavily loaded trucks, so I know pretty much what
can happen.

It already saved my rig and possibly my life once.
