Lawrence, I feel your pain. Your difficulties removing the driveshaft brought back a flood of memories form when I removed the transmission from my 77 330D, just over a year ago.
I ended up disconnecting the drive shaft at both ends, and removing the two bolts that secure the center carrier bearing. I was then able to drop the driveshaft down at the rear differential, and pull the whole assembly back just enough to get the rubber doughnut off the transmission. Oh, I had also already removed the transmission cross-mount, and the rear of the transmission was dropped down. It took a fair amount of prying at the yolk, wiggling the drive shaft and jiggling the transmission to get ths shaft to seperate from the it.
